Avocado Soybean Unsaponifiables (ASU) 35% Powder – Natural Joint Health Ingredient for Dietary Supplement Formulations

Avocado Soybean Unsaponifiables (ASU) is a specific plant extract obtained from the unsaponifiable fractions of avocado oil and soybean oil in a proportion of 1:2. The Plant Oil Unsaponifiable Matter Separation and Purification Method is used to make our ASU. The purity specification is 35% as tested by HPLC. It is a powder of light yellow to cream colour, soluble in vegetable oils and lipid systems. This ingredient is produced in China and is ISO9001, GMP, FDA, Kosher and Halal certified with a MOQ of only 1 kg to enable flexible B2B procurement from nutraceutical and supplement brands from across the world.

What Is ASU and How Is It Made?

ASU concentrates the remaining physiologically active, non-saponifiable fraction following hydrolysis of avocado and soybean oils. Typical vegetable oils are composed of 98–99% saponifiable fatty acids (triglycerides) with little bioactivity for joint health. The functional chemicals are present in the unsaponifiable fraction and comprise just 1–2 % of the original oil.

The fraction is isolated and concentrated with care by using the Plant Oil Unsaponifiable Matter Separation and Purification Method. This results in an ingredient that is about 50 – 100 times richer in phytosterols than the original oils.

The 1:2 ratio of avocado to soybean is a technically verified criterion. Alteration of this ratio has been demonstrated to decrease efficacy of essential bioactive interactions, therefore ratio integrity is maintained throughout manufacture.

Key Active Compounds and Physicochemical Properties

ASU's functional value is built on its naturally diverse lipid-soluble compound profile. The primary components include:

  • Phytosterols — including beta-sitosterol, campesterol, and stigmasterol
  • Triterpene alcohols — contributing to the lipid-active fraction
  • Tocopherols — natural antioxidants supporting stability
  • Squalene — a minor but biologically relevant component

The total sterol content in quality ASU typically reaches ≥30%, with beta-sitosterol representing 40–60% of the sterol fraction. This sterol fingerprint is what distinguishes authentic ASU from generic plant sterol blends.

Because ASU is lipophilic, it is insoluble in water but soluble in vegetable oils, lipid-based systems, and select organic solvents. For aqueous applications such as beverages, microencapsulation or emulsification technologies are required to produce water-dispersible forms — a customization service available through our OEM/ODM offering.

Application Areas

Avocado Soybean Unsaponifiables serves multiple B2B formulation sectors, each with distinct technical requirements.

Joint Health Supplements

This is the primary use case. For products aimed at knee and hip joint comfort, ASU is available in softgels or capsules, often at a 300 mg daily dose. Its mode of action is to enhance cartilage-related nutritional pathways, rather than simply functioning as a symptomatic relief – an important differentiator for premium product positioning.

Nutrition for Bone & Sport

ASU is a natural plant-derived functional substance that fits well into sports recovery and bone health formulations. It contains phytosterols that provide nutritional support to regulate daily mobility and physical performance.

Mouth and Periodontal Care

ASU has been explored in supplementary dental health applications where its plant bioactives offer support for periodontal tissue. This makes it a relevant ingredient for specialised oral supplement makers.

Skin Barrier Formulations and Dermocosmetics

ASU is used in advanced topical anti-aging therapies due to its phytosterol concentration. It enhances epidermal elasticity and skin barrier reformation, especially in formulas for aged or environmentally stressed skin.

Quality Control and Stability

For B2B buyers, ingredient quality traceability is non-negotiable. Our ASU undergoes HPLC verification as the primary testing method for purity confirmation. Additional quality benchmarks include:

  • Heavy metal testing — Pb, As, and Hg levels controlled within regulatory limits
  • Residual solvent analysis — Headspace GC testing ensures hexane and ethanol residuals meet USP/EP standards
  • Peroxide Value — Maintained below 10 meq/kg to confirm lipid integrity during storage and transit
  • Acid Value — Controlled below 2.0 mg KOH/g to ensure the material has not undergone degradation

ASU is a lipid-based product and is sensitive to oxidation, so it is important to store it properly in cool, dry, and light-protected circumstances. For foreign logistics, we pack them with nitrogen-flush to ensure long shelf stability and active compound integrity.

FAQ

Q: What is the avocado-to-soy ratio in your ASU product?

A: Our ASU is formulated in the approved 1:2 unsaponifiable ratio of avocado to soybean. This ratio is crucial in sustaining the bioactive interactions that constitute the functional profile of ASU.

Q: What's the purity of your ASU 35%?

A: Purity is tested with High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), the industry standard for measuring the amount of active ingredient in plant extracts.

Q: Is your ASU compatible with water-based formulations?

A: Native ASU is lipophilic, not water-soluble. For aqueous applications, microencapsulation or emulsification is required. We can support this with our OEM/ODM customisation service.

Q: What certifications does your ASU have?

A: Our product meets ISO9001, GMP, FDA, Kosher and Halal standards and allows for regulatory compliance in North American, European and global markets.

Q: What is the minimum order quantity? What about the package?

A: MOQ is 1kg, normal packing is 10kg and 20kg. Custom Packaging Available Upon Request.

Q: How should ASU be stored to preserve quality?

A: ASU should be stored in a cool, dry location away from direct light and moisture. For the shelf life, packaging under nitrogen is recommended to prevent oxidation and maintain the integrity of phytosterols.
